Peter’s Experience as a Virtual Mentor

StandUp for Kids – Orange County

Meet Peter, one of our incredible mentors at StandUp for Kids. He was introduced to the organization through a virtual lunch with his company, Evisions. Since becoming a mentor, Peter has helped his mentee with college applications, career guidance, following their passions, understanding finances, and creating a stable footing while transitioning into adulthood.

As a virtual mentor, Mr. Wilbur found it difficult at the beginning to differentiate guidance and mentorship from instruction. He stated, “I don’t want to come across as some know-it-all… because I don’t know it all! A big portion of the position calls for listening and keeping close attention to detail, not just to come into these kids’ lives and be a parent. Being a mentor is more of a guide.” Peter also stated that it’s more about having an open dialogue with the youth he serves and not just having a “…this is what I’d do,” mentality.

One of the biggest lessons Peter has learned during his time mentoring is viewing other perspectives and looking at the world through the youth’s eyes. This helps create a much greater understanding of what the youth are going through, you see it like they do and then walk through these trials together. “When we overcome a challenge and achieve success, it’s an overwhelming feeling. It makes me want to continue to be a mentor and encourage others to join StandUp for Kids as a mentor,” Peter said.

There are so many opportunities for mentors and volunteers, just like what Peter is doing.
