Josh first came to StandUp for Kids as a teenager looking for support. Like many of the youth we serve, he was working hard to find stability and direction during a difficult time in his life.
Now, Josh is a student at Orange Coast College with plans to transfer to a four-year university. And just last week, he returned to StandUp for Kids. This time, he came as a leader giving back.
As part of a final project for his interpersonal communications class, Josh and his classmates were asked to do something that would “Make the World a Better Place.” Josh immediately suggested they support StandUp for Kids. He shared his experience with his peers, organized a clothing drive across campus, and encouraged others to get involved through volunteer and internship opportunities.
Their group passed out fliers, gave a classroom presentation, and rallied their campus community. The result was an incredible donation of clothing that will go directly into the hands of youth in our programs.
The donations arrived at the perfect time, only a few days before our back-to-school event. After carrying all the donated items into our office, the students stayed to help sort and organize everything for distribution. With their help, we were able to prepare youth with the essentials they need to start the school year feeling ready and supported.
We are proud of Josh and grateful for the OCC students who brought their time, heart, and effort into this project. It is always meaningful to see former youth return with a desire to give back. Josh’s story reminds us of the power of growth and how support at the right time can make all the difference.
