StandUp for Kids - Orange County

StandUp for Kids is not only dedicated to ending the cycle of youth homelessness, but is also committed to helping volunteers find a role they are passionate about. We admire all of our volunteers’ perseverance with StandUp for Kids. One volunteer in particular stood out this last month.

Leigh joined StandUp for Kids in 2019 and since then she contributed her time to various different roles. She has worked in tutoring, food delivery, events, office work, and grant writing.

“I volunteered for grant writing, and that is when I really had to commit my time and talent to the organization.”

Despite the obstacles faced, Leigh was determined to reach her end goal. When joining the team, Leigh was worried she wouldn’t find a role she felt comfortable in. With support from the team, she overcame those challenges and found a position that was best for her.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community while expressing yourself in new ways. Leigh recommends aspiring volunteers to communicate their personal interests and desired roles to explore with their supervisors. Volunteers should take their time choosing roles until one feels right.

At StandUp for Kids, Leigh was able to try new ideas and gain trust through the community. During her time with us she saw herself and the organization evolve. New ideas were brought up by the team to help youth in diverseways that could be more effective.

“I think everyone should know what a good reputation the organization has in the community and also why StandUp for Kids is so successful at helping youth reach self-sufficiency…StandUp for Kids is one of the best and easiest organizations to volunteer with. The people are amazing to work with and I love the email blasts with a pick list of jobs for volunteers!”

As a retiree, Leigh feels that volunteering has allowed her to continue learning, be challenged, stay productive, and give back to her community. StandUp for Kids gave Leigh the opportunity to test her limits not only as a volunteer but as an individual.
