48 Hours + Global Month of Good

StandUp for Kids – Chicago

Starbucks celebrates the annual Global Month of Good in the month of April, where they can use their scale to bring together their partners, customers, non-profit organizations, civic leaders and business partners to dedicate their time and energy to create positive and meaningful change in the communities they serve by holding local service events.

The first year of Global Month of Good resulted in 1,400 projects across 30 countries, 60,000 volunteers and 156,000 hours of service. The work, which included cleaning parks, painting murals at elementary schools and renovating houses, benefitted more than 250,000 people in neighborhoods around the world, and has continued each year since 2011 through projects addressing a variety of critical needs in local communities. Last year, the company encouraged partners to focus on service projects that support Opportunity Youth – young people between the ages of 16 and 24 who are not in school nor employed. Global Month of Good has helped instill in their partners that you can own what you want to see, and get excited about the impact in local communities and what that means. They truly feel a responsibility and accountability to take action.

The mission and intent of StandUp for Kids “48 Hours On The Streets” serves three major purposes. They are:

1.  To educate the general public to the plight of homeless and street kids.

2.  To conduct 48 hours of continuous street outreach in hope of maximizing the amount of kids assist, and

3.  To serve as a national public relations project for StandUp for Kids to sustain and generate new growth and support for the program.

StandUp for Kids, a national non profit volunteer outreach organization that is dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk, homeless and street kids through trained volunteer outreach efforts, complete their annual 48 Hours on the Streets Program. StandUp for Kids will literally hit the streets in more than 20 cities across fourteen states for 48 consecutive hours of street outreach the last weekend in April starting on Friday night at 6:00 pm.

The purpose for the 48 consecutive hours on the streets is simple – we need to reach all the youth that are living on our streets, in our gutters, alleys, under bridges, in abandoned buildings and many other dark and lonely places.  Once initial contact is made, it is only a matter of time until we are able to make a long term impact. Initially, we provide basic necessities such as clothes, hygiene products and food. Our outreach approach is effective because we don’t ask for anything return. We simply tell kids that “we want to help them do what they want to do. What is that?”
