When Maria first reached out to StandUp for Kids, she was living on the streets of Anaheim with her 18-month-old baby while pregnant with her second child. Without access to food, showers, or basic needs, she carried the heavy responsibility of protecting her children while struggling to survive herself.
On a holiday weekend, Maria called our 800 line and our team immediately rushed to meet her. That day, she and her child were placed in a motel and finally had a safe place to rest. From there, Maria was connected to a family shelter, where she has now been living for several months.
In that short time, she welcomed her second child, received baby items such as diapers, clothing, a stroller, and car seats, and was supported with groceries and other essentials. She is now taking the next step by enrolling in school.
Maria never stops saying “thank you” for the support she has received. But the truth is, Maria has done the hardest work herself. She has shown incredible strength and determination to create stability for her family. Her children are healthy and happy, and she has proven that sometimes what makes the difference is simply having someone believe in you.
