Being part of this community, even briefly, has made me feel empowered to help people find the changes they desire. Maybe even more valuable though, outreach has taught me the power of listening to somebody's story. So many of the youth I met during outreach wanted to know that somebody cared enough to listen, more than they wanted hygiene packs or clothes. Finding a nurturing community is so necessary for comfort; you've got a truly wonderful community of volunteers here and you're creating a life-changing community for the homeless, at-risk and street youth.
I'm honored to have been involved,
Thank you thank you thank you for this opportunity :)
Love,
Abi
On November 21, 2010 StandUp For Kids - Tacoma held our first Thanksgiving gathering, which was held at the Nurture Healing Center in downtown Tacoma, WA. We want to send many thanks to the Nurture Healing Center for the support they gave to help make this a successful event. This gathering was to give thanks and to create a stronger bond between the youth we support and our volunteers and the NHC provided a beautiful atmosphere to do so.
Peace Out, inc. is an after school program that inspires teens to become young philanthropists by giving them the experience of raising and donating money to causes that are important to them.
Michele McLean, one of the founders, contacted StandUp Directors Ruth Mohr and Sel Korah to inform them that one of her students had selected the Tacoma charity as his charity of choice.
Noah said he selected StandUp For Kids because he was really affected by the fact that 13 kids die on the street everyday from neglect, abuse and suicide.

In honor of the nationwide 48 Hours on the Street Campaign, the Tacoma Chapter is working hard to let Tacoma know about our program and our kids. On Saturday, April 25th at 11 AM, our volunteers will be running an informational booth on Pacific Avenue in front of the UW Tacoma bookstore. Stop by for information about our program and how you can help or get involved. Look for our 13 candles, which we will light in honor of the 13 kids that die each day on the streets.
On Sunday, April 25th our volunteers will conduct a march through downtown to raise awareness of our Tacoma program. Look for our purple shirts and thirteen purple balloons, honoring the thirteen youth who die each day on the street. If you see us, stop and say hi, or just honk your horn to show your support for street youth and StandUp For Kids!
If you'd like to get involved with 48 Hours on the Street or StandUp For Kids in any way, don't hesitate to e-mail us at tacoma@standupforkids.org.
