Electrical contractors give to children’s charity in Las Vegas

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- A national electrical contractors association will donate $11,000 to STANDUP FOR KIDS in Las Vegas on Nov. 30. The donation was collected during an event at the Independent Electrical Contractors Inc. (IEC) Annual National Convention, held Oct. 1-4 in Las Vegas. IEC is a national trade association made up of more than 3,000 merit shop electrical and communications contractors from across the county.

“IEC members make a difference in their own communities and now they are making a difference in the communities they visit,” said IEC National President Jim Thurman. The effort to raise money for STANDUP FOR KIDS KIDS was part of the IEC Cares program, an initiative of the IEC Foundation. IEC Cares raises funds during IEC national conferences across the country. Money raised from IEC members during conferences is donated to a children’s charity in the host city.

“We are glad to be able to assist in the work of an organization that is so completely dedicated to helping children at risk,” said Thurman.

Run entirely by volunteers, STANDUP FOR KIDS is a nationally acclaimed organization with 26 outreach programs in thirteen states. STANDUP FOR KIDS in Las Vegas has been reaching out to the city’s homeless and street kids since 1999. In addition to helping homeless and at-risk youth with immediate necessities such as food, clothing, shelter and personal hygiene, STANDUP FOR KIDS offers a wide array of services including: housing assistance; educational assistance; vocational development; counseling; health services; transportation to self-help meetings; and legal assistance. According to Rick Koca, founder and CEO of STANDUP FOR KIDS, the donation from the IEC members will be used to purchase an Outreach Vehicle for the organization in Las Vegas.

Established in 1958, IEC national headquarters is in Alexandria, VA. For more information, contact IEC at (703)549-7351 or visit the IEC website at www.ieci.org.
