Stand Up for Kids, San Diego
Day 3: Monday, March 29, 2006
By: Tamara Miner
I awoke to the third and most boisterous parade
of protest by the Mexican population of downtown San Diego.
This time they had brass instruments along with their emphatic
chants against the new illegal immigrant policy. After all
10 of us were showered and presentable to the outside world,
we walked as a group to the national office and bought ourselves
Stand Up For Kids purple t-shirts. They will prove to be
a lasting investment, since the Turn Purple campaign is
coming up in Philly as well.
After donning our purple attire, we split
ourselves in half-five returned to the Center to look for
charity grants, call radio stations for airtime, and to
contact TV stations to request a story on Stand Up For Kids.
The other five of us (including myself) were to hand out
flyers on the streets and find restaurants willing to display
a Turn Purple poster or donate food. We dispersed and individually
found street corners with high volumes of foot traffic.
A lot of people were unresponsive, but many of them (once
they realized that the cause was more than worthy) showed
interest and genuine thanks.
