Ride For Life 2008
The sun was just starting to rise and while most of you were still snuggled under the covers, our own Chuck Ritz and friends were busily preparing for the day, just as Chuck had been doing for months. It was 7:00 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, October 12, 2008: the Third Annual Ride for Life to benefit the Baltimore Child Abuse Center and Stand Up For Kids-Baltimore. Thanks to Chuck, all the volunteers, vendors, donors, family, friends and supporters, the fundraiser was a huge success!
The weather was beautiful as we registered approximately 150 riders. T-shirts, pins, bracelets and magnets were sold to raise awareness of both nonprofits and the annual Ride for Life event. The riders returned about an hour later to the wonderful smells of grilled food and the fantastic sounds of jamming bands. Several outside vendors were onsite selling their wares. A silent auction was held to help benefit the organizations.
By 6:00 p.m. dusk was settling and we were starting to clean up. Chuck did an awesome job: $2,714 was raised for Stand Up for Kids-Baltimore! Chuck, words can hardly express our gratitude. We appreciate all you do – thank you from the bottom of our hearts and from the bottom of the hearts of our kids!
Believe it or not, Ride for Life 2009 is already in its planning stages. Feel free to visit www.theride4life.info to view information from the 2008 event. If you are interested in volunteering, donating or supporting by way of a sponsorship, please feel free to contact Chuck at therideforlife@aol.com.
Benefit Fashion Show
Stand Up for Kids Baltimore hosted a fashion show at the Sonar Club to benefit at-risk teens on June 22, 2008.
Read about it in the Baltimore Sun here.
Harbor City High School
StandUp For Kids-Baltimore is bringing programs into the city school system. Our volunteers are mentoring homeless and at-risk youth through an after-school program at Harbor City High School,
an alternative school that has arguably the highest rate of student homelessness in the city.
We are always searching for guest speakers on topics that apply to our youth. This year our kids have specifically requested speakers on topics such as drugs and addiction, gangs, teenage parenting, guns and violence.
Please contact us if you have ideas or suggestions for guest speakers.
If you are interested in helping at Harbor City, please contact Addie at Baltimore@standupforkids.org.
Street Outreach
StandUp For Kids- Baltimore is starting our on-the-street outreach and are very excited to be able to provide outreach to some of Baltimore's youth who live on the streets without any support.
If you are interested in joining our street outreach team, please contact Addie at Baltimore@standupforkids.org.
Under Fellowship of Lights
Unfortunately for Baltimore, Fellowship of Lights has suspended its direct services to homeless youth. Due to lack of funding, one of Baltimore’s only emergency shelters for homeless youth has closed its doors.
We want to thank Ms. Huggins and Ross Pologe for extending such warm welcomes to our outreach volunteers.
We also want to give a special thanks to Thryn and Gabe Albin, two newlyweds who dedicated a year and a half to provide art therapy to the youth at Fellowship of Lights. Although there were periods of time when the Baltimore Chapter of StandUp For Kids was inactive- Thryn and Gabe continued to provide outreach; they were able to provide invaluable support to many youth. Thanks: enjoy the Peace Corps!!!
COMMUNITY CONNECTION
One way Stand Up for Kids gives support to homeless youth is by connecting them to resources that can help them in various ways. These include youth programs, food sources, scholarship and education opportunities, transportation, sports and recreation, arts, and health care. If you know of any organizations or resources that we can add to the list to help support our homeless youth, contact us to let us know.
