What is Denver Up To?

Our thirty volunteers are reaching out to a little under 100 kids a week! Read below to find out what we’re doing and how you can be part of this incredible community!

OUR KIDS

In Memory of Rinu

Rinu.jpg
On January 28, 2010, Rinu—a great poet, a caring soul, a brilliant young woman who loved animals—lost her life. She was only 20. We never imagined we’d have to face the day when we’d lose one of our kids. We were able to drive members of her street family to attend her memorial. The kids read moving and funny poems that really celebrated Rinu.

Rinu was one of the first kids we met when we started outreach. We helped her through the ups and downs, were able to eat some meals with her, and teach here some valuable tools for taking care of herself. Her passing has been difficult on our volunteers, but we hope she is at peace now. She certainly left behind many people who love and miss her.

Here’s a lovely article the Denver Post created about her:

Sunday Meals

Every Sunday night, STANDUP meal sponsors serve anywhere from twenty to sixty kids a warm, home-cooked meal.
Sponsors purchase, prepare, and serve the meals to our kids.
If you are interested in being a meal sponsor, sign up on our Sunday meals signup sheet and an organizer will contact you with more details.

Thank you to all meal sponsors!

48 Hours

April 30 – May 2, 2010
From April 30 to May 2, 2010, STANDUP will provide a safe and comfortable environment where our kids can get off the streets and just be kids for 48 hours! We will also be providing a plethora of services:

  • Healthy meals,
  • Showers,
  • A place to sleep,
  • Laundry services,
  • Medical services,
  • Hair cuts, and
  • Art stations and fun activities.
If you or your company would like to participate in 48 Hours by sponsoring a meal or donating a service to the kids, such as planning an outing to a concert or museum, contact Rachel at rachelb@standupforkids.org.

Purple House Campaign

Thank you to the Westalls for donating a
house to STANDUP FOR KIDS!
This cute little house needs a little TLC.
Soon, we will launch a campaign for:
  • Building material donations,
  • Office furniture and other house content donations,  and
  • Volunteers to help us renovate this little house to turn it into home base for STANDUP volunteers and kids.

For more details or if you’d like to participate in the Purple House Campaign, please contact Elasha at elashaf@standupforkids.org.

People’s Fair

STANDUP will be at the People’s Fair! We need volunteers to help us staff our beer booth for the weekend. This is a fun experience for groups over 18 years old to help STANDUP raise money for our kids and bring awareness to the issue of homeless youth!
To sign up for a shift, go to our People’s Fair sign-up sheet.

THANK YOU TO OUR COMMUNITY SPONSORS!

December Volunteer of the Month

John McMurry was elected the
December Volunteer of the Month
MCMURRAY

Here’s what John’s peers say about him:

John has been an incredible asset to the Denver team. John came on board as an outreach counselor and director of program support. Under his care, he has brought in enough donations to bring our kids sandwiches three nights a week along with other food and toiletries. He as formed incredible relationships with other organizations helping homeless youth, helping to share the resources across the Denver community. He has mentored the kids to no end, teaching them things like popping their arms with rubber bands in place of cutting. He really gets to know the kids; he remembers what their wishes and desires are and searches out donors to bring them those things. Not only that, all of us volunteers love working with John. He has great energy, his one of the wisest people on the planet, he is motivating, and is just downright fun and knowledgeable.

Congratulations, John!

The Search is on. Volunteers NEEDED!
STANDUP FOR KIDS is an all volunteer program, so for us to be there for our homeless kids, we need your help! If you or someone you know is interested in getting involved e-mail us: Denver@standupforkids.org
