STANDUP FOR KIDS - BOULDER

Volunteers of the Quarter

Volunteers of the Quarter are recognized for their excellence in helping our homeless children. They demonstrate a strong commitment to serving as volunteers for StandUp For Kids. Our program is 99.9% volunteer run; we would not function without the dedication of these individuals devoted to making a difference. We value the enthusiasm of our volunteers and the impact our Volunteers of the Quarter have made.

1st Quarter
Mary Ellen

Mary Ellen (on the right) is walking and searching for kids
with another volunteer, Laura during outreach.

I remember being very nervous on my first outreach not knowing what to expect, once we started introducing ourselves and talking to the kids my nervousness lifted. The kids were very receptive to us and to what we had to offer.  I do feel like I have made an impact on a few kids and it feels great to be a part of an organization doing wonderful things. One of my favorite experiences with StandUp was our Labor Day BBQ with the squirt guns, prizes and face painting,” Mary Ellen says.

Mary Ellen has been a volunteer with StandUp For Kids since February 2001.  She has been an instrumental part in establishing the new Boulder program.  She is an outreach leader and has also been active in making many lunches for homeless and street kids.  She always has a smile on her face and an optimistic attitude.

Mary Ellen works a full-time job and also volunteers frequently with StandUp For Kids.  She enjoys Ultimate Frisbee and has an adorable cat.  Mary Ellen is a happily married young woman who has even inspired her husband to join in with some of StandUp’s special activities.  It is very uplifting and encouraging for our kids to see a young married couple help and care.

One volunteer says, “Mary Ellen is very outgoing with the kids. I can tell that she is genuinely sincere with the kids. One of her great values is being humble.” Another core volunteer feels Mary Ellen is always there for her and works well as part of a team that is powerful in reaching out to the kids.

One of the homeless kids thinks of her, “Mary Ellen is very caring and concerned about me and talks to me and tries to help me figure myself out.” Mary Ellen always converses with the kids comfortably and is helpful in listening to any of their problems or concerns.

2nd Quarter

Ilene

Ilene helps in a clothing organization effort with other volunteers.
She is sorting through socks, mittens, thermal underwear, etc that have
been donated and will be given out to homeless children.

"Ilene has been a huge help to both myself and all the other kids.  She's very enthusiastic about putting in an extra effort to help us all out, and she even brings us Blowpops and other lollipops!", one of our kids observes.

Ilene moved to Colorado from South Florida 11 years ago with her husband and two kids. She has always enjoyed working with children and welcomed the opportunity to help homeless and at risk youth, when she joined Stand Up For Kids in March 2001. She is certainly an enthusiastic volunteer with Stand Up! Ilene is involved in many different areas of the program, including outreach coordination, outreach counseling, training, public speaking, and more.

One volunteer said of Ilene, "You can always count on Ilene to be calling some of the volunteers to go out and bring extra warm clothing to the kids, whenever the weather looks wet and cold, and we are always willing to help her with this!"
When Ilene had hip surgery, she couldn’t bear the thought of missing outreach. After healing for a couple weeks, Ilene was back out on the streets. One of the homeless adults said, “You really do care about these kids, don’t you? You’re out here on crutches!”

Ilene has formed close mentoring relationship with several of the homeless kids in Boulder. Some of the kids even refer to her as “Mom” because of her caring attitude and persistence in helping. “Ilene is really nice. She’s always there when I need her, sometimes even when not. She’s kind of like a mom. She really cares,” one of our girls said.

“When you touch a person with caring and kindness, you cradle the soul of humanity,” Ilene says. She certainly lives out her insightful quote.

3rd Quarter
Dave

Dave was raised in Littleton, Colorado. An interest in math and computers led to a degree in Accounting from the University of Denver. Most of his career has combined business applications with computer software development, as well as user training and support.

After moving to Boulder five years ago Dave began hiking the front range so much he joined the Mountain Parks Volunteer Naturalists program. Dave continues to enjoy the outdoors as he pursues his interest in nature photography, both still and video.

He joined StandUp for Kids in November 2000 while planning was still under way for the new Boulder chapter. He continues to participate in nearly all outreach sessions as a team leader and assists with many special events.

Dave has been referred to as “The Rock” of StandUp For Kids. Dave has consistently been a strong volunteer with the program! He has devoted a lot of time to organizing the donation items in a storage area. He is always prepared with the clothing items and hygiene products that we take out each night to outreach.

One volunteer said of Dave “Dave is quiet yet very known. He represents a very positive male role model for the kids.” This is crucial for many of the homeless kids who have never experienced a strong father figure. The kids really respect Dave and he has been referred to as “Uncle Dave.”

Many of our kids call Dave the “Cheeseman” because he is notorious for bringing a supply of string cheese. This item seems to be very popular with this group and the kids are always looking for Dave to see if he brought his string cheese.
