Special Bulletin:
Attention College & High School Students
#1 We are looking for student volunteers to establish StandUp For Kids clubs at your school! These important clubs will act independently on their respective campus as an extension site to our Detroit chapter and will be responsible for giving Don't Run Away presentations to 3rd-8th graders about the dangers of the street and alternatives to running away.
Please contact Co-Executive Director of Operations, Uyoung Park at UyoungP@standupforkids.org if you would like to learn more about this exciting club opportunity!
#2 We also have many administrative internships available! We can work with your schedule and tailoring an internship program that is in line your current educational goals while you help us to further build our programs for at-risk, foster and homeless youth! Please contact Co-Executive Director of Program Support, Jessica Newman, at JessicaN@StandUpForKids.org if you would like to learn more about applying for an internship.

PROGRAM UPDATES:
Alternative Outreach - Our extremely caring Alternative Outreach Counselors have been very busy mentoring at-risk foster care kids who are transitioning out of "the system" with the CIAO Project- an agency of MichWorks!. We are very thankful to have such a great group of volunteers willing to give up their time to help us pursue our mission to rescue homeless kids of Detroit! Through the project we have had the pleasure to work with a great group of young people to help them find stability in their lives as they begin their paths to self sufficiency and independence. If you are interested in becoming involved in our Alternative Outreach program, please be sure to click the Get Invloved link to the left to find out how you can get trained to join us!
Street Outreach - Our diverse team of Street Outreach Counselors were so reliable and dedicated to our mission to hit the streets of Detroit consistently over the summer! We are always on the look out for new volunteers and are especially seeking those who are bi-lingual in Spanish/English to help us launch our second team for next summer that we hope will cover the Mexicantown Hispanic community in Detroit. See map below for details of the area where we wish to launch. We are now conducting trainings over the Winter in order to prepare new volunteers for Street Outreach again next summer (starting in late May) so please be sure to sign up! Click the Get Invloved link to the left to find out how you can get trained to join us!

Don’t Run Away - Volunteers are continuously being trained to work on our Don't Run Away presentations but we are hoping to recruit more high school and college students to start Don’t Run Away Clubs or act as Don’t Run Away theater troupe presenters in the Detroit Public Schools and at Off the Streets Youth Shelter. To find out more information how you, your teen or high school group can get started on this unique opportunity to reach kids before homelessness starts, please contact Co-Executive Director of Operations, Uyoung Park at UyoungP@standupforkids.org. Don't worry, even if your school doesn't start a club, we could still use and will train high school and college age students to help us give presentations, so please inquire today!
Community Resource Survey Project - STANDUP FOR KIDS Detroit has also been busy doing surveys of the resources that are available to homeless and street kids in and around the city. We'll be using the survey for several purposes: 1. to identify the real issues surrounding the homeless and street kid's issues, so we know what needs to be accomplished as we start our STANDUP FOR KIDS program.
2. To articulate these issues to supporters, sponsors, and prospective volunteers. 3. And, probably most important, we'll use the completed survey as the resource list of services that are available to homeless and street kids and at-risk youth. We've started on the survey and have a growing list of organizations that we need researched. If you'd like to help us, please click the Get Involved link to the left, fill out the volunteer application and specify Survey Assistant as an area you are interested in. If you have specific questions or are an organization who would like to work with us or our kids, please contact Jessica Newman at JessicaN@StandUpForKids.org for more information.
SPECIAL THANKS
STANDUP FOR KIDS Detroit would like to always give special thanks for all of the assistance from sponsors and volunteers this past year.
#1 Thank you to Willy’s Overland Lofts for hosting Illuminate Detroit on Friday, October 26th. In conjunction with Detroit Synergy and CAID, StandUp Detroit hosted an event featuring local music, art, fashion, and food showing what a great place Detroit is to live. Willy’s Overland Lofts generously donated their space to hold the event which raised a considerable amount of money to assist StandUp for Kids.
#2 Thank you to the Women in Networking WOMEN’S EXPO for sponsoring our SUFK table and helping us get the word out on how to help. In addition, they ran a raffle with all proceeds going to StandUp. It was a wonderful day of making connections and spreading the word on how to get involved helping the area’s homeless youth.
#3 Thank you to D’Amatos Restaurant for hosting our Calling an End To Youth Homelessness afterglow on Tuesday, November 13th. Following the cell phone vigil at 7:13 on Main Street, Royal Oak, people gathered at the restaurant to learn more about how to help put an end to youth homelessness with five percent of all drink proceeds going to StandUp. D’Amatos also provided us with a space to set up a SUFK table and provided volunteers with free food.
#4 Thank you to all the cell phone collectors participating in the CALLING AN END TO YOUTH HOMELESSNESS campaign. Schools and organizations such as Stevenson Livonia High School, Schoolcraft College and Oakland Community College have been at work contributing to the cause. If you want to start a drive, please visit our website or click on the following link: http://www.standupforkids.org/callinganendpromokit.htm
#5 Thank you to Sterling Lanes, Asian Village, R. Hirt Jr (prize donations) for hosting our BOWLING FOR HOMELESS YOUTH event on Tuesday, August 28th.
#6 Thank you to McNarney’s Irish Pub for hosting the Rockin on the River event on Friday, August 10th. Thanks also to Sports Illustrated (prize donations). A percentage of drink receipts went to StandUp and food was provided to attendees of the event.
#7 Thank you to the Cool Chicks Club Macomb County Women’s Expo for sponsoring our SUFK table and helping us get the word out on how to help. On Sunday, September 28th, Cool Chicks helped raise sizeable funds for StandUp and provided a space to make many important connections for future endeavors.
RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT NEWS:
Because we do not receive federal funding, we are always on the look out for caring individuals or organizations to volunteer their time or resources to help us procure items that we continuously and desperately need and use to help the kids, in addition to donating funds to keep our operation going.
