To the Local Atlanta Program

IN THE NEWS

April 27-29, 2007

Each April, STANDUP FOR KIDS rings in spring with its annual 48 Hours program.  A public awareness campaign to educate the community on the plight of Atlanta’s homeless youth. The facts are staggering and most people have no idea that:
  • 13 kids die every day on the streets in the U.S.
  • Atlanta has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time
  • 1 out of 7 kids run away before age 18
  • Studies suggest as many as 90% of kids who leave home do so because they have been physically, sexually or emotionally abused
  • Runaway kids have 48 Hours before turning to an illegal act for survival.

This is the reason why our program is called 48 Hours. Predators know a child on the streets is scared and more willing to give in to the selling of drugs or even worse, their bodies, just for something to eat.

This is why STANDUP FOR KIDS exists today to help these kids get off the streets and get their life back on track. Our goal is to raise awareness in the community of this issue and raise some money so we can expand our street outreach. The two main components of the program are:

  • 48 Hours of outreach on the streets of Atlanta
  • Partner with 10 companies in the Atlanta area to raise $4800 per company in 48 hours through employee contributions
$4800 contribution goes directly to the kids.
  • Help feed and clothe these kids
  • Help expand our street outreach
  • Help the kids to receive counseling and referral services
  • Help continue our outreach program
  • Help support our Outreach Center
  • Help give kids hope!!

Outreach Center Opens Atlanta

After years of labor from hundreds of volunteers, many still around to see the results of their hard work, the Atlanta program opened the doors to its drop-in center on October 5th. Offering separate male & female showers, a full commercial kitchen serving hot meals, a clothes closet, 8 station computer lab, laundry, and phone services for homeless and at-risk kids, the center saw 7 kids the first night of it's opening. STANDUP FOR KIDS — Atlanta made a commitment to their community, volunteers and at-risk youth. So far in 2006, they have reached 4,254 hours of community service, averaging nearly 88 hours a month on the streets. If you're in Atlanta, or 32 of the other cities that we're in (click here to find your community), get involved. Be the one that gets it done. With your help we can double these hours in 2007.
